Abstract

Library is considered as the storehouse of human history, heritage and knowledge. The inevitable necessity of preserving knowledge as well as its furthereance necessitated the establishment of libraries in ancient times and their gradual expansion. In course of time lots of rich libraries were established in golden ages under the auspices of Muslim rulers. This magnificent initiative effectively spreaded  knowledge in different parts of society. Moreover, these libraries played a pivotal role in the advancement of civilization. This article has endeavoured to explore the historical background of library and the magnanimous influence of library in the topography of Islamic civilization. This paper has demonstrated that library has played a crucial role in the development and enrichment of Islamic Civilization. During the dowfall of Islamic Civilization most of the libraries faced the fate of destruction. The tragic siege of Baghdad by Halagu Khan and the consequential demolition of ‘Baitul Hikmah’ can be cited as one of the barbaric incidents of history. The author laments that destruction of libraries causes irreparable damage to the mankind.
