Abstract

Islamic Shariah postulates that Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. He has created human being with inborn fascination towards beauty. Considering this inclination Islam does not deny this human desire of beautifying one’s body. Since time immemorial men and women have been wearing different types of ornaments as a part of increasing beauty. Body piercing is required to wear several types of ornaments. For decades women have been piercing different parts of their body including nose, ear to wear oranments. Contemporary society is also witnessing the practice of wearing oranments by male in different parts of the world and this tendency is gradually increasing. Given this backdrop a scrupulous research is highly needed to elucidate the relevant rulings of Islamic Sharia regarding body piercing specially for wearing ornaments. Comprehending the crucial significance of this issue in the milieu of contemporary society this article has endeavoured to enumerate different terminologies regarding body piercing (to wear ornaments), various types of body piercing, its historical background, differences of opinions among the Islamic jurists (fuqaha) regarding body piercing by men and women, superstitions relating to body piercing etc. Moreover, the author has painstakingly advanced a bunch of recommendations to facilitate individual to evade prohibited matters regarding body piercing. Relying on descriptive and deductive method this research has critically revisited the writings and verdict of classical and modern jurists. This article has attempted to demonstrate that it is lawful to pierce the nose and ear of women for wearing ornaments. However, body piercing for this purpose is not mandatory  under Islamic Shariah and this act is not tantamount to body distortion. Most importantly, excepting nose and ear women are not allowed to pierce other parts of their body. Islamic Sharia, as the author submits, has absolutely proscribed men to pierce different parts of their body including nose and ear.
